3 Days to Kill

Saw 3 Days to Kill, the new Kevin Costner spy-with-a-daughter flick. Is it a spy movie or a family comedy? Yes. I’m sure this isn’t going to do well, but I was surprised – shocked – at how much I enjoyed it. It’s a funny, sweet, charming movie that also managed to have some legitimately good action scenes (not many of them, but they were good).

Kevin Costner is really good – happy he’s back. Hailey Steinfeld from True Grit and Ender’s Game is the daughter and she’s also pretty great. Amber Heard plays a femme fatale and, if this wasn’t a comedy, she’d have been terrible.

McG directed this and it was written by Luc Besson (crazy Frenchman behind The Fifth Element). McG has been very uneven as a director and Besson is just all over the map unpredictable. They seem to have made a good team here.

There’s a whole lot of things happening here and arguably it could be edited down – the movie is really shaggy but it was trying so hard to be funny and quirky, I give it a pass.

It got a little long by the end which drags the score down… but I forgive it for being just so darn charming.

It’s a cute, funny flick.
