Boss, The (2016)

Checked out The Boss, Melissa McCarthey’s new film where she plays a super rich CEO sent to prison for insider training who gets out and has to rebuild her empire with the help of Kristen Bell and the Brownies.

This is an ok comedy… sometimes it’s actually quite funny but there’s too many attempts at gags that they clearly thought were funny by how they keep overplaying them. So it’s an uneven comedy in my estimation but also an uneven movie in terms of tone. It has drops into the absurd in a Brownie/Girl Scout fight that reminded me of Anchorman… and the end of the movie involves a Samurai sword fight / Delayed romance between Peter Dinklage and McCarthey. Why is Peter Dinklage wielding a samurai sword? It’s kind of out of place in a movie that otherwise wants to be kind of a heart-warming if sometimes raunchy comedy.

Yes, Peter Dinklage is in the movie, though he’s not at all in the trailer. So too are Kathy Bates, Cecily Strong, and Tyler Labine. Decent to impressive cast overall and they all do a fine job, though Dinklage does appear to be parachuting in from another movie (but that’s just the weird script).

So, yeah, a fairly decent movie with some genuine laughs and fairly genuine emotions mixed with some random left-field action comedy. I guess, because, why not?
