Brooklyn

Watched the academy award nominated film Brooklyn. This is about a young Irish woman who moves from Ireland to Brooklyn to find a better life with more opportunity. Set in 1952, this is a sweet, gentle, earnest, adorable, lovely, and romantic film that really worked on me.

When Ailish, the lass, arrives in the US, she’s nothing but homesick and reserved. She lives in a woman’s boarding house (as a single woman is want to do in the 50s, I suppose) and makes friends with the potential mean girls living there too – but this movie is not interested in cliches and while these other ladies are arch, they are human and friendly. Ailish then meets a sweet Italian boy who loves Irish girls and they begin to date, meet his very Italian family, plan a new home, and maybe even a marriage.

She eventually goes back to Ireland for a visit and kind of falls in love with her old stomping grounds again. Will she stay or return to Brooklyn and her beau?

That’s really it – it’s a very effective movie that moved me (it gave me the feels). There’s no crime, no guns, no violence, and no 50 foot tall transforming robots. Just a sweet little romantic pic that I found myself thoroughly invested in.

No chance it’ll win Best Picture, but Saorise Ronan may deserve a statue for Lead Actress. She’s really luminous, really emotional gut-wrenching, and funny. And wow is her native Irish accent something to hear… and her eyes are just piercing.

So, yeah, this may not be for everyone but I recommend it to anyone all the same. If you like a little slice of life movie with a wallop of romance and occasional sadness, this one is for you.
