Deliver Us From Evil

Also saw the relentlessly bleak, relentlessly rainy horror / possession / exorcism movie Deliver Us from Evil which is the supposedly true story of an NYC police detective tracking down a demonic force that is infecting people and causing them to do violence to their loved ones. It has a good cast including Eric Bana as the cop, Joel McHale (improbably) as his wise-ass partner (the only source of levity in this film), and a surprising Olivia Munn using a convincing (to my ears) Bronx accent (G4 fans will be surprised, most everyone else will shrug). Like I said above, this is one bleak film – always dark, always rainy – the film tries very hard to generate a mood decay and dread. It is basically chasing Seven. And it succeeds on a certain level without being half the film that is. This is a goodish movie that may really get under the skin of some people. I was never bored but neither particularly shocked or surprised by it.
