Checked out Going in Style, the new movie about grumpy old men who decide to rob a bank. Grumpy old men played by Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine… so some solid pedigree and the only reason the movie works at all.
These three guys are made because their company merged with another and voided their pensions plus Caine’s mortgage was tripled by an uncaring bank. So what better thing to do than a bank heist. A comedic bank heist that happens about 50 minutes into a 90 minute movie and then deals with the aftermath for an unexpectedly long time.
This is a movie that happens and then is over and will never be remembered again except for that time Caine, Freeman, and Arkin worked together. It’s not particularly funny nor particularly bad… it just kind of plays out with some minor degree of cool. It’s ultimately a big shrug. Cool cast though.
