Home (2015)

Went to see Home, the new Dreamworks animated film. I went in thinking it was going to be terrible… so maybe those low expectations resulted in me being really enamored by the movie. It’s very charming, surprisingly sweet, and had some good on point humor. I also appreciated that the movie was a legit sci fi story but dressed up as a kid’s movie. By which I mean that, if you scrape away the super cutesy stuff, the remaining story is pretty solid.

Voice cast was interesting in that they didn’t promote it all over the trailers so I was surprised to realize (though how I didn’t hear it) that Jim Parson (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory) was the voice of the main alien. And Rhianna was the voice of the teenage girl main character. There were some other good voices in the flick including Steve Martin.

I also found the use of music really well done. The trailer implies some very by-the-book hip hop music and the movie does have a lot of hip hop or R&B in it but none of it felt like they were going for the obvious songs. So I liked licensed tunes and the score itself.

So, yeah, maybe I went in with expectations set too low but I was never bored, I laughed out loud a decent amount, and I found the overall story compelling. And it was cute.

Score: 85
