Monuments Men, The

Went to see The Monuments Men – the new George Clooney, Matt Damon, Kate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, etc. WW2 movie about a crew of art historians sent into Europe during the closing days of the war to ensure that the Nazis don’t retreat with all the stolen art from the territories they’d conquered.

It’s a curiously weird movie in tone and has random, scattershot scenes that sometimes pop in out of nowhere, things happen, and the rest of the movie goes on… maybe that was a moving scene, maybe it was a funny scene, but it wasn’t a well put together or structured movie ultimately. One minute it has a barrel-full of gold fillings and next it’s cracking jokes… and I have no problem with the mixture as long as it feels coherently paced. Which this movie did not.

Still, there’s some very sweet, somewhat funny, and occasionally beautiful moments going on and you want to root for the cast… and the story is interesting… but ultimately it’s a nice effort that should have been a lot better.
