Oculus

Went to see the new scary flick Oculus – a movie about an evil mirror (it’s a sub-genre!). It stars Karen Gillen (Amy Pond/Dr. Who) and Katie Sackhoff (Starbuck/BSG) among others and has the basic premise that a brother and sister encountered an evil mirror when they were kids and now, ten years later, they face the evil mirror again. The brother is just out of the pscyh ward so there’s a chance this is all in their heads. This is a movie with no horror movie rules and where everything may or may not be happening (evil mirrors make you see things… or maybe everyone is nuts). It’s a well made movie with a fair amount of suspense (and limited cheap jump scares) and a creepy soundtrack that may get under your skin but there’s never a moment where there are any rules and where there’s a chance nothing that happens is happening (and the movie constantly flashes back and forth in time to tell you the earlier story and the present story). This doesn’t mean it may not be a scary movie for you… but for me I was taken out of the movie with the constant second guessing. That said, hey, at least the movie wasn’t predictable.
