Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume 1

Noticed a new sci fi film on iTunes (streaming) with the inexplicable title “The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume 1” and I just had to give it a try. Because what kind of title is that? I figured it was A) clueless, B) self-important, or C) optimistic. I’m afraid it might be a little column B and C since the movie is produced well enough to suggest it’s not A.

What the movie is is an indie sci-fi film filmed in Australia with a certain amount of ambition and some excellent visual effects. Someone with competence put together a better than B movie on a relatively low budget that manages to look more expensive than it was. I don’t recommend it to anyone other than sci-fi fans… who will have largely seen most everything the story has to offer.

Set on a colony world with a large prison population, the evil corporation that polices the planet from a floating airbase is up to evil corporate things. Suddenly, a prison breakout occurs and the inmates threaten a melt-down at the nuclear power plant. Or are the evil corporate evil managers covering up their evil plans? Only our not-evil corporate hero can find out, assuming he can escape the sky fortress and reach the surface to save his child before the ticking clock glasses the planet.

It’s not a bad little movie and, as mentioned, the visual FX are sometimes excellent (though ultimately limited) and the practical creature effects are surprisingly good. It’s nothing you haven’t seen already but there is an occasional cool new idea or attempts at real emotional depth for the actors. Maybe give it a spin.

Whether there’s a Science Fiction Volume 2 or not is up in the air. I wouldn’t mind seeing it though.
