Raw (2017)

So, there’s this French indie horror film called Raw that made the festival circuit rounds that was so horrific, so gory, that people were fainting in the audience. Don’t believe the lies – this is a kind of unsettling horror film but it’s more of a thoughtful indie film than some kind of gore-fest. That said, it’s still a film about a vegetarian girl who goes to veterinary school and, during a hazing stunt, is forced to eat a rabbit liver and then she becomes a cannibal (and eats her sister’s finger that was lost in an unfortunate Brazilian wax accident).

It’s not a bad movie and if you are sensitive to blood and violence, this movie could indeed be disturbing. But it’s more conceptually gross and if you are steeped in horror flicks and desensitized to this stuff, it’s not so bad. Besides, it’s really not about cannibalism so much as it’s about… I dunno… a girls awakening sexuality in college… or maybe feminism… or who knows what it’s really about. Heck, maybe it’s just about a girl with a taste for human meat. End of story.

Either way, it’s a pretty good film that was a bit over-sold… and I’m cool with what they delivered. I’m not sure anything much more gorey would have added anything other than a splatterfest. So, yeah, if you are looking for a creepy little art-house French horror flick, this is pretty good. And, really, who isn’t on the lookout for a creepy little art-house French horror flick, right?!!
