Seventh Son

Seventh Son is a new fantasy flick out now starring (curiously) Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moor. Drunken knight with marbles in his mouth (Bridges doing an explicable accent) and his apprentice fight witches… or dragons… or bears….

This is another movie that’s been delayed by over a year and then dumped as the start of the year (though with a superbowl ad so I guess they spent some cash on trying to sell it).

The movie is largely uninspired, unoriginal, and uninteresting. It’s not an utter disaster – there’s some merit here and there… the action isn’t completely poorly filmed, it’s kind of funny when it’s trying to be serious and its actual jokes weren’t funny enough that it was funny they thought it was funny (that’s circular logic, I think).

Jeff Bridges plays a knight that everyone (good, bad, and indifferent) calls a Spook. So you have the bad guys ominously saying, “we must find the spook and kill him!” and all I could think was “ZOINKS, Scooby! A Spook!!” Sigh. I guess you get your giggles where you can get ’em.

The flick reminds me of a cross between Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (which was in on the joke) and Season of the Witch (which was not)… same premise… and lands right in the middle of them.

Skip the flick… unless you dig goofy fantasy flicks for being goofy fantasy flicks… or like seeing good actors slumming.,.
