Snatched

Also checked out the big mother’s day weekend movie Snatched. This is the one starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn. Hawn hasn’t been in a movie since The Banger Sisters back in 2002. I guess her husband Kurt Russell is back in the acting saddle so might as well be her time too? Oddly, Schumer plays her daughter and you would think they’d have cast her real-life daughter Kate Hudson…

Regardless of the casting choices, this is a pretty good, often very funny movie. I suspect the amount you’d enjoy it might depend on your tolerance for Schumer’s brand of comedy. I ain’t gonna lie – she’s playing the Amy Schumer character again.. and I’m amused by her so she didn’t bug me. Goldie Hawn is fine. It’s nice to see her back on screen and it’s a trip seeing early photos of her young self… but I’m not sure how much she brings to the pic. I suspect, again, the more you like Goldie Hawn, the more you’ll like the movie. And I like Goldie Hawn enough to give her a pass and say she was fairly amusing.

The basic premise is that they take a mother/daughter trip to Ecuador and get kidnapped… or taken… or maybe even snatched. Their agoraphobic and very annoying brother has to convince an increasingly annoyed State Department agent to help. Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack round out the bill as fellow tourists / special forces. Honestly, the secondary cast may be better than Schumer and Hawn.

The movie is getting terrible reviews so maybe I was just in a good or forgiving mood. I suspect some of the user reviews are anti-Schumer backlash from folk who haven’t see the film. Professional reviews are harder to hand-wave away. All I can say is I laughed a lot more than I didn’t so maybe take your mom to the movies. Or make your good-for-nothing, lay-about kids take you.
