Tammy

So I caught the movie Tammy, the latest comedy from Melissa McCarthey (also starring Susan Sarandon in a terrible wig). This is, unfortunately, not a good movie but it tries real hard to be something. And I think it doesn’t know what it wants to be… It wants to be a comedy, drama, road movie, woman on the run, and character study and I think it’s been mismarketed as a wacky, slapstick broad big Summer comedy. It’s not that and it isn’t trying to be that… It feels like it wanted to be a smaller, more personal film but had studio intervention trying to force it into a boarder, wackier comedy. Humor is, of course, subjective so maybe others will get more laughs than I did. McCarthey can be good with this kind of half-scripted, half-improved comedy (which describes 90% of the The Heat, a much better movie). Ultimately, it’s a well-intentioned failure of a movie… it’s trying quite hard but it still misses. I was bored and only occasionally chuckled.

Beth Webb, since you asked earlier if I’d see this, you may enjoy it more than I did since you have enjoyed certain comedies that I did not. The movie isn’t getting good reviews from those mean critics so it’s not JUST me (I doubt the opinion of a bunch of stuffed shirt professional meanies means anything to you). But, hey, if you see it, let me know what you think. Like I said, it tries.
