Void, The (2017)

To all throw-back 80s horror fans, watched a new flick called The Void (on iTunes, limited theatrical release) which is very much inspired by flicks of that decade. Basic premise: a group of people are trapped in a hospital by robe-wearing cultists while … something… is growing out of corpses within.

This movie is really unsettling and unpredictable. It looks like a pretty low budget film that spent a decent amount of money on practical creature effects. Very limited – if any – CGI in the flick. These creature effects are gross, drippy, disgusting body horror abominations. So don’t go into this if you don’t like some good old fashioned gore. But it’s not (just) the gore that gets under your skin – the director really knows how to both show and hide for visual punch. And to craft extended, unsettling scenes of tension.

I rather enjoyed the film and its intentional use of uncertainty. They don’t really over-explain what’s going on and that ambiguity might bother you. There are characters with motivations and backstories that are only briefly mentioned – I could have used more since the film clearly wants us to care about the people.

Inspired by movies like The Thing and Prince of Darkness (with a little Lovecraft thrown in), this is a pretty effective and drippy, oozing, gross little throwback horror flick. You know if you are the kind of person who would like it… and the kind of person who would avoid a flick described as oozing and dripping.
