What We Do in the Shadows

Checked out the weirdo mockumentary indie comedy What We Do in the Shadows… a movie in limited release and on digital streaming. It’s a fake documentary that follows four vampire roomates just trying to live their undead lives in New Zealand while being filmed by a camera crew (with crucifixes). It’s one of the funnier movies I’ve seen in a long time… the first 30 minutes or so are laugh-out-loud funny but it doesn’t really hold onto that level for the full runtime.

But, hey, it’s still a hoot… the four vampires just have some interesting problems living in the modern world and dealing with being vampires in general. They just want to go clubbing but it’s tough when the bouncer won’t actually invite them into the club… it’s tough to dress to the nines when you can’t see yourself in a mirror AND your style is trapped in the 1800s… or the 1300s… or even the -6000s. Then you have to deal with the werewolves (werewolves… not swearwolves guys!), the cops, getting your clothes dry cleaned when your lunch bled all over them, etc.

The fake documentary thing doesn’t make logical sense throughout but whatever. It had a real Spinal Tap feeling to it and some of the limited visual FX they got away with on their shaky cams and low budget were really impressive.

It’s a surprisingly R rated comedy as well… while it’s very funny, it doesn’t hide from the blood… these guys do eat people. So it’s a kind of gleefully mean funny.

So, hey, really funny flick… just wish it had been that funny through the full length of the film.
