The new film The Hurricane Heist is, if nothing else, truth in advertising. It is, indeed, about a heist… during a hurricane. It’s a pretty dumb action film directed by someone who has been making pretty dumb action films for decades. The director is Rob Cohen… who made Dragonheart, Daylight, The Fast and the Furious (original), xXx, Stealth, and The Boy Next Door. None of these are classics and some are just bad… but if an infinite number of monkeys can write Hamlet…
That’s my way of saying The Hurricane Heist is better than it should be but it’s not exactly good. It’s a so-bad-its-fun action flick about a lot of dumb people trying to rob the national reserve during a hurricane. Only the (equally dumb) security guard, the stormchaser, and his drunk brother can stop them. The movie feels out of time… like it was something made in the late 90s and only released today.
The film is full of “hey, I know that guy” B-level actors, some better than others. Hey, it’s that gal from Lost (Maggie Grace), and that guy from a couple episodes of Game of Thrones… oh, that’s the dumb brother from True Blood. Oh, I know that guy… he looks like Cassie Affleck but isn’t Cassie Affleck… what’s his name?
This is a dumb movie but it’s kind of fun anyway. This isn’t a strong recommendation… but if you enjoy 90s disaster and crime movies for the goofy nonsense they sometimes were, this might be right up your alley. Not sure I’d recommend running out to the movies since it’ll be rentable in a week or two given how well it did over the weekend.
