I could have rented any number of mature, very serious films with intellectual themes and high minds… but instead I rented Psycho Goreman. Not because it looked like the cheapest of sci-fi B movies, but because it starred a couple kids in what looked like an 80s throwback to both Spielberg and Troma.
And… well… it’s a good joke at least. I mean, I found the concept of a couple of kids unearthing an imprisoned galaxy conqueror former ruler and turning him into their play thing kind of funny. And the little girl being just as psycho as the Psycho Goreman. And I appreciated the practical rubber suited monsters that ranged from pretty good, to disturbingly gory, to Power Rangers levels of cheese.
But the joke is all the movie has and it would have worked as a comedy skit or, at most, a 30 minute short. But stretching the joke to 90 whole minutes left me in a temporal stasis loop where the movie, I think, lasted a good three very tedious hours.
I appreciate the attempt but not the execution.
