Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is about Mrs. Harris who goes to Paris… to buy a Christian Dior gown (frock) in 1957. She has no practical idea how the House of Dior works, but she’s got gumption and the respect of the seamstresses and models and she’ll get it done, the red-blooded British commoner way.
I low-key enjoyed this fairy tale of a flick. It’s centered on a love and admiration of fashion and gowns which I simply do not share… but a good movie can make you appreciate anything. Just ask that devil who wears Prada and the other one who wanted to turn Dalmatians into fashion.
The film is a little predictable and mannered but also curiously rabble-rousing. I wasn’t particularly surprised by anything but I did feel the movie had a lovely tone and intent. The side characters had their own personalities, big and small, and created sweet subplots that resolved nicely.
This is a pleasant little film that has nice life lessons to teach and existential crises to master. I kind of enjoyed it and appreciate more than it had the gumption to get a theatrical release in an age of laser guns and capes.
