Your Monster

Your Monster is a weird one. For one thing, it should be called My Monster <shakes tiny fist at uncaring universe>. But it’s also a horror/comedy… but no, it’s actually a horror/rom-com… even if I think the horror bit was an insert to get the movie made.

It’s about a woman in a funk who moves back into her family home and runs into the closet monster she abandoned a long time ago. He isn’t happy to see her… he’s got a nice single man’s life going on here. But they decide to cohabitate and eventually become friends and maybe more. In a rom-com kind of way.

It’s weird though since the monster mainly looks like a hairy hobo… or maybe more like a Geico Caveman. He barely looks like a monster in the traditional sense. But I guess they can’t make him look like Sully or Frank or whatever the cartoon beasties were named in If.

Thing is though, it’s a pretty hum-drum rom-com regardless of the facial hair on the monster. It’s actually a little boring… sometimes cute and sometimes sad when they have the typical rom-com break-up. It’s not terrible but… eh?

But then it delivers a kind of fun “hell yeah” kind of ending that is pretty messed up but also smile-worthy fun. Plus a musical number that started out eh but turned into big, broad, triumphant pause-for-applause kind of thing. I’m not sure it’s worth the time to get there nor am I sure what “really” happens, but it at least it saved the flick.

It gets a pretty average score, but at least its average and not below average it was angling for. They bring it home. Just barely.
