Canary Black

Canary Black is a spy thriller. And… hmm… I can’t think of anything clever or interesting to say about it in my intro paragraph. That’s not a good sign.

It stars Kate Beckinsale as one of those super spies whose husband doesn’t know what she does for a living. He gets kidnapped, she gets blackmailed, she goes on the run to rescue him, chased by her own agency and the bad guys.

Kate Beckinsale is not a sexy female leather girl vampire and she doesn’t use her sexy British accent. She otherwise punches and kicks and plays badass just like in the old days. She’s the only reason to watch this movie and I’m not sure that’s enough.

It’s a thoroughly generic spy action thriller. It looks generic, the action is serviceable but not particularly good, the spy shit is ok, and the music does everything it can be the exact soundtrack you’d expect. Du-du-dud-DUD-du-du-DU. Wash, rinse, repeat.

This movie might as well not exist with every other spy thriller available to us already. And yet it’s setting itself up for sequels… and I’m not particularly interested or excited for a round two. I guess I’m happy if Beckinsale gets work though… she’s the only thing holding this together.
