Novocaine

Watched as part of Monday Mystery movie (early preview).

Novocaine is a hoot. I could probably end the review there… it’s just a hilarious action/comedy. But it’s more than that… it’s two leads who have gallons of chemistry together. I wasn’t expecting much but I’m glad I got what I got.

The film stars Jack Quaid as an assistant bank manager with a genetic disorder that makes him immune to pain. When he meets the lovely Amber Midthunder, they hit it off and he proves the pleasure principle. But when crooks rob his bank and steal his girl, he puts his life and limbs and all his other body parts on the line to save her.

This film is brutal and bloody… but in a funny way! Since he can’t feel pain, nothing the baddies can do hurt him… though that doesn’t mean he doesn’t receive massive bodily injury (he just doesn’t notice or care). Some of these injuries are cringeworthy and trigger one of my few wince responses. It’s a pretty fun but giggly cringe gruesome.

So I laughed a lot but what really got this movie over was the cute factor between genial cute wimp Quaid and sassy badass Amber Midthunder. They are great together and, by the end, I was fighting off my bladder just so I could see them reunite. They are a cute pairing and the film introduces complications that are fun and intriguing.

Amber Midthunder played the lead in Prey and it was great to see her in makeup and modern clothing. She’s a real presence who deserves more and better roles. Plus… what a name. Jack Quaid is always welcome too… especially when he can play a doofy good guy.

So if you don’t have too queasy a stomach and you want to laugh at the gross parts and cheer at the good ones, Novocaine is a ton of fun. And if you want a cute on-screen couple, it’ll work pretty well on that level too. It’s worth checking out.
