Control Freak

Control Freak is a film padded out from a short film (which I haven’t seen). It feels like a lot of wheel spinning and time wasting in order to get to whatever point the short got to. I found it tiresome and tedious.

It stars Kelly Marie Tran as a motivation speaker who has a demon in her head… or something hand waving vague like that. It wants to drive her mad (I think) and part of that is making her scratch her scalp until it bleeds.

And her scattered mind is the long and short of the movie. Just a lot of repetitive freakouts and hallucinations, none of which are actually happening… or if they are real, there’s too much runtime for them to impact the story just yet. They have to repeat a dozen more times until we get to the end.

This kind of “it’s probably not rea… butl maybe it is” larceny just doesn’t interest me most of the time. If it’s not real – or even if it is and it doesn’t matter – then why should I be scared?. We both know we aren’t going to get to the ultimate point until the third act and everything before it is just filling time. And by the time we get past an hour of wheel-spinning, the movie has lost me.

Occasionally the flick would give us some creature effects that were ok… though even that loses punch when you realize it’s basically a giant ant. There’s some gross body horror that might appeal to people with obsessive compulsive issues. I’m sitting here drinking a Coke against my will so I can identify a little.

The flick eventually drags itself to an end that was ten to fifteen minutes longer than it needed to be. And I’ll have forgotten this film in a week… it’s not even loony enough to be a good bad time. No thanks.
