Brave

Posted on June 26, 2012 by Joel Hilke

Saw the new Pixar flick Brave about the Scottish princess with all the red curls… everything in the trailers is wonderful and fun and rates really high on the Pixar-scale. The actual plot, which happily isn’t ruined by the trailers, … Continue reading →

Avengers, The (2012)

Posted on May 5, 2012 by Joel Hilke

Avengers Assembled… and it’s good. Wish I was doing backflips (wish I COULD do backflips… heh) but it worked and looked fantastic and was fairly fun and funny. It ain’t no Dark Knight but it’s better than, say, Thor and … Continue reading →

Cabin in the Woods

Posted on April 13, 2012 by Joel Hilke

Saw Cabin in the Woods tonight – the movie about the college students who go off into the woods for a good time weekend to a mysterious CABIN IN THE WOODS (only to run into trouble)… and if you’ve seen … Continue reading →

John Carter

Posted on March 9, 2012 by Joel Hilke

The movie John Carter has a boring, non-descriptive “could be anything” title is based on a series of pulp novels from the 1910s by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It looks like a dozen other big budget movies so the uninitiated might … Continue reading →

Artist, The

Posted on January 29, 2012 by Joel Hilke

So The Artist is the front-runner for Best Picture this year. Saw it. Can’t say I agree in the least. It’s a story any movie goer familiar with the classics has seen before (can the silent film actor adjust to … Continue reading →

Red Tails

Posted on January 22, 2012 by Joel Hilke

Saw Red Tails today – the WW2 war movie about the Tuskegee Airmen (the black pilots). People who are cynics, who can’t handle war movie cliches, who hate rah-rah patriotism, and/or who just hate hate hate George Lucas will hate … Continue reading →

Haywire

Posted on January 22, 2012 by Joel Hilke

Also saw the new Steven Soderberg action flick Haywire – starring the female MMA fighter (and American Gladiator, apparently) star Gena Carano. It’s very Bourne-like in that the fight sequences are very real/believable (partially because their star knows her way … Continue reading →

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The (2011)

Posted on December 24, 2011 by Joel Hilke

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo… based on a long slog of a book I gave up on a third of the way through is a movie that’s too long for its story. It’s certainly watchable (when it’s not being graphically … Continue reading →

We Bought a Zoo

Posted on December 24, 2011 by Joel Hilke

We Bought a Zoo… they did. It was a cute movie. Charming and sweet. Matt Damon does his usual solid work. I’m not sure there’s much to say about this flick other than it’s well worth seeing. Score: 82

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Posted on December 24, 2011 by Joel Hilke

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – best of the series and one of the best action movies of the year. Solid, solid movie that knows how to be a good action movie and to put an action scene together. Great set … Continue reading →
