This documentary is so slight its over before it even begins. It’s such a cursory examination of the book burn… I mean banning – (aka social mockery) that I might as well have just looked up videos of school board meetings instead.
Which isn’t to say it’s won’t bring awareness to a crime in our midst. It’s just that… yeah… A) there’s not much to it, B) it’s wildly cherry-picked, and C) it’s wildly one-sided. I don’t demand both-sides on the topic of murdering books, but maybe give the opposition a chance to hang themselves. Explain why some of the books are banned and *gasp* let us decided who the real villain is.
As it stands, it’s largely just a list of books – many of which make you blink in confusion – that are either banned or under review for banning. Each has a very carefully picked piece of prose that argues why anyone would hate such a book. And some interviews with precocious 12 year olds.
The kids are cute and the call to action noble so I guess it got its point across. Charitably. Very charitably. Yet I so much wanted a better analysis… hell… any analysis… on the matter.
