I’m familiar with this infamous director’s past “true crime” efforts but I’ve never seen them. Never had enough interest to track them down. But Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman was on Netflix. I was on Netflix. Might as well be on Netflix together.
So this Aileen Wuornos pic (I won’t legitimize it by saying it’s a bio-pic) is about the early years of the future serial killer. She lurks about Florida and winds up marrying a rich man and proceeds to try to take over his life and his money. His daughter is onto her and this results in a lot of murder, a lot of overacting, a lot of sneering, and a lot of canes swung at heads.
This movie is exploitative trash… but it knows it’s exploitative trash. I’d say it’s fairly honest about that and you got to give credit where it’s due. Nobody is making Monster here… this is just bad taste splashed on screen and that can be fun too.
And I’ll be honest… there’s legitimate fun to be had in this movie if you’re drunk, hanging out with friends, and only half paying attention. The camp is strong with this one. I mean, I cackled with tacky glee at some of the overacting and dialog.
But I’m afraid the bad editing and directing and the tedium and bad pacing in the second half just became too pronounced. This movie overstays its trashy welcome and no amount of camp can save it.
It’s unfortunate too since they were obviously going for simple sleazy entertaining. Something like Wild Things. But, no, the inability of the director (and writer) to keep the cheesy fun going crashed this flick… there’s bad, and then there’s “Oh dear god will this movie just END” bad and this falls in the later category.
