Neither a sequel nor an adaptation of the children’s book/2015 film, this in-name-only sequel stars an all new cast with new characters. I guess it’s a thematic sequel where the theme is a kid having a bad time of it. Might as well call it National Lampoon’s Mexican Vacation.
It’s about a family fronted by Eva Longoria on a road trip to Mexico on which everything goes wrong, in a vacation mishap kind of way. Cheech Marin as grandpa follows along. Oh, and hey, Futball is Life! Danny Rojas (Cristo Fernández) has a small part too.
This flick is pretty harmless but in a Disney Channel family comedy kind of way. Perhaps the target market would enjoy it and their partents will suffer through it (or use Disney+ as a babysitter). I was neither amused nor hateful… I was mainly in a state of mild boredom.
I did like the Mexican-American angle of rediscovering your roots. Or, in this case, not seeing the point of learning Spanish (until marooned south of the border). It’s at least a different take on the bad trip film.
Overall. this flick is kind of bland and kind of harmless. I’m sure it’ll find an audience on Disney+.
