All Together Now

I watched the Netflix movie All Together Now for one reason alone: it stars Auli’i Cravalho. The young actress played the voice of Moana in Disney’s animated film and she seemed like a bright, energetic presence in all the behind-the-scenes videos for that flick. I was curious to see if she could bring that spirit to a live action movie. And, you know, because sometimes you just want something bright and frivolous and slight to watch, I gave her and the flick a chance.

The film is about a teenager who is living with her mom on a school bus. Making it work yet too proud to admit or accept help from her friends or their parents. She has dreams of singing professionally and, when she gets a chance to show her skills across country, she has to make tough life decisions.

On my way to grumbly pegging my way to finding this movie ok, it started to have its way with me. I started to care. And then it takes an turn – drops an emotional bomb on the audience – and suddenly I wasn’t watching the light bit of frippery I thought the movie was going to be. And it had me… I cared… I cared deeply and was moved on multiple occasions.

Cravalho does have that bright energy I expected but she has the range to prove she’s a real talent. She’s joined by some other young actors and veteran talent, including a surprise part for Carol Burnet. She was a pretty great co-star (even if a relatively minor part) for Cravalho’s youth to play against.

So, hey, maybe give it a shot. It certainly caused my icy, shriveled heart to melt (if I want to torture a metaphor). It might work for you too.
