Saw the new con artist / 70s crime drama American Hustle… a very very actorly movie starring a lot of bad 70s clothes, bad 70s hair, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Louis CK, Robert DeNiro, Christian Bale’s massive belly, and Amy Adams’ boobs (crass? Yeah… but just check out her clothes… they are a distinct character in this movie).

The story is good but not great but the characters are great and the actors look like they are having nothing but fun sinking their teeth into the dialog and mannerisms. Amy Adams is especially great as a cold, calculating, and dangerously intelligent woman… and J. Law’s dangerous instability and stupidity is continuously fun.

In fact, this is a surprisingly funny movie with some weird moments including a very strange performance of Live and Let Die. This is a good, mature, intelligent movie… a little long for its story but that just gives the actors room to do their thing.

It’s also curiously more of a Martin Scorcese movie was than than his own Wolf of Wall Street…
