Also rented on iTunes 2018’s high school musical zombie comedy Christmas movie Anna and the Apocalypse. This is a small Scottish flick that has a lot of heart, not a lot of brains, that almost works.
Yes, it’s a musical comedy and the actors break out into admittedly very catchy pop and show tunes to express their inner selves while battling the undead hordes. The dance and choreography is charmingly amateur and the tunes are fun and funny. This is easily the best part of the film and that’s good since this is what they set out to do.
The rest of the film is more uneven. It’s a definitely R rated zombie film that follows the usual tropes of a low budget zombie flick. No real surprises here… and the film can’t hold up its sagging middle. The actors are all likable and do a fine enough job and there are a handful of exciting, creative, and moving moments. But I was largely checked out in the middle of the flick. It couldn’t sustain itself.
So, yeah, this movie has its charms and if you dig musicals and don’t mind a little zombie action, you might have enough fun with this one. It’s charming, it means well, and the actors are game. If only the whole was as good as its fun parts.
