Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp is the sequel to the “Hey, that was kind of funny but not particularly serious” Ant-Man from a few years ago. This movie is even less serious and has fewer stakes… it makes Ant-Man look like Infinity War (if Infinity War was a comedy).

In Ant-Man and the Wasp, the heroes are trying to recover the original Wasp (now played by Michelle Pfeiffer) from the Quantum Realm. And that’s about it. Oh yeah, and random bad guys are trying to steal their science lab (conveniently miniaturized) and Ant-Man is trying to stay one step ahead of the FBI since he has two days left on his house arrest after helping out the heroes during Civil War.

All of this is light and fizzy and ultimately kind of forgettable. It’s very funny at times since the movie is basically a comedy with superheroes and maybe that’s a good thing after Infinity War bummed everyone out. This takes place slightly before Infinity War, for what it’s worth.

I low-key enjoyed Ant-Man and I low-key like the new one well enough. It’s not as good as Ant-Man since there’s so little at stake and a lot of the plot elements just seem to be in there for busy work. The bad guys chasing them around are forgettable gangsters and only seem to be there to give them something to do. The super-powered villain who can walk through walls looks cool and she has an interesting back-story… but not enough screen time. The FBI agent is particularly funny. And so are Michael Pena and his crew… and their random infatuation with truth serum.

I dunno… to damn this movie by saying it’s a little better than Thor: The Dark World seems mean. The movie doesn’t want to be anything more than a light, frothy piffle of a flick so it doesn’t seem fair to compare it like that. But the honest truth is, I got bored watching them run around trying to solve a bunch of random problems.

Mid credit scene is worth watching, end credit scene was in the trailers. Derp.
