Checked out a little low-budget horror movie on iTunes called The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Hmmm… horror movie… autopsy… yeah, this isn’t going to be bloody AT ALL! Of course, it is… but it’s also a very unsettling movie that really nails a mood using good nuts ‘n bolts film-making (and excellent horror makeup).
The movie stars Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as small town medical examiners who have to find cause of death for a perfectly preserved Jane Doe pulled from an incomplete grave in the basement of a murder house. What they find as they inspect and dissect is something I won’t say other than it’s all done very well. Be warned though, they are doing an autopsy and they don’t shy away from much.
It’s kind of like the creepiest and darkest version of House.
This is a very good flick for the first hour but it fails to stick the landing. When things need a final explanation, they do it in a ham-handed way – the characters explaining backstories they couldn’t possibly know. I liked what they were saying but not that they were saying it (it’s a good explanation done poorly). Probably the only way to get the story across without a costly flashback scene (the movie basically takes place in three rooms with two actors and maybe five bucks).
So, yeah, if you dig creepy little horror flicks, this is a good one. Love the build up, be prepared maybe for not the best ending, and you’ll have another very good 2016 horror show.
