Went to see Avengers: Age of Ultron and I’ll declare that the movie is good. It’s good, but not great. It’s a little long and seems to have more flab than it should… though to the credit, some of this is due to actual attempts at character growth and moments for people like Hawkeye and Black Widow. It does kind of slow the film down but it’s still appreciated.
To put it in context, the Avengers was a fair bit better but this is better than, say, the Thor movies.
Of course, the movie looks amazing and most of the characters get good action beats and character moments. It’s funny and does some nice things with the history of these characters. I can’t say I was overawed by the villain which was a disappointment. He has vague and kind of simplistic motivations… and then randomly drops some quips that felt out of place. Some of the characters do have some subplots that don’t seem to go anywhere and some smash down bang up action beats that don’t really matter to the rest of the story (not really).
We do have some new Avengers and I like them… though one of them seems… not out of place… but kind of quickly drawn into the story. Felt a little too much like adding another character for a character sake. I suspect this (and some other stuff that seems to be kind of abrupt) may have a lot more meaning to comic book fans where these things have more importance and weight. I dig the Marvel movies but I don’t read the books so I think this one leaked a little bit more of its comic-bookiness than the other movies have.
This is a pretty humdrum review for a good movie. I don’t think there’s any reason you shouldn’t see it if you’ve seen the various other flicks. I’d see it… I might even see it again.
