Bagman is a thread-bare premise draped lazily over alleged folklore from across time and cultures. Which was a bit of hubbaloo in the middle of a film that barely has a plot to begin with.
It’s about a couple with a toddler and an evil whatsit spirit thingy with a bag who kidnaps children. Or tries to… he’s very bad at his job. Also… creepy dolls sometimes? I dunno.
The film is repetitive and does the same thing over and over in a very repetitive way, repeating itself often and not only a little. I mean, it’s almost like it was a short film that they put on the rack and stretched until it snapped.
It’s mainly endless scenes of the family putting the kid down and wandering away… and the bagman, I dunno, trying to open a window. Harassing them with the sound of opening his bag? Grinning from under Emperor Palpatine’s hood? Just… kind of being a pest, really.
And there’s only so many times you can repeat yourself before you’ve repeated yourself repeatedly. If you don’t have anything more than the frayed ends of a plot, maybe write more plot? Or more characters? Do something with the supernatural history? Or make it shorter? Something…. anything!
At least the film looks good and is one of the few horror movies of late that has electric lights that actually light a room. It’s bright, maybe a little too colorful at times, but at least its not murky. And the finale is decent. Maybe a little easy to see from a distance, but at least it felt good, even if it spoon feeds what’s really going on.
A pretty meh film that repeats itself. Did I mention that it repeats itself? Did I cram that joke down your throat? Sorry about that. The bagman was at my window being a pest so I didn’t really edit this review. Goddamn Bagman being a repetitive pest.
