Checked out the new limited release/digital distribution action teen comedy Barely Lethal. This is a flick about teenage super spy assassins and how one sees too many John Houghes movies while on assignment and realizes she wants to be a regular teenager.

The cast is good… Hailiee Steinfeld (from True Grit) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones) play two of the assassins who are trained by Samuel L. Jackson. Jessica Alba has a part as a small role.

But the movie is just terrible. Boring, predictable, unfunny and barely a step up (or possibly down) from a Disney Channel movie (like Princess Protection Plan which is a movie I’ve actually seen).

Only good thing is realizing Hailiee Steinfeld plays a character who is trained as a child to be a warrior because children are easy to manipulate… which is the same plot as Ender’s Game also starring her. And Sophie Turner plays an assassin who has to create alternate personalities… just like her tv show sister Arya in Game of Thrones. And Sam Jackson has to train children to be badass warriors… like the Star Wars prequels. All of these are better movies and shows (even Star Wars prequels).
