Bionic

Bionic is a Portuguese hybrid Netflix film about a near future where artificial limb technology is significantly advanced. A female Olympic athlete has just such a bionic limb while her equally athletic younger sister does not. But a crime syndicate needs a bionic woman for their current master plan… and they have their eyes on the younger sister (maybe she needs an upgrade?).

Not a bad idea for a film if they could have figured out which film they wanted to make. As a film playing with the ideas of Olympic athletes with advanced artificial limbs, they are onto something. As a crime thriller… it’s kind of predictable and generic. As a combination of the two plots, I got whiplash.

Most of this is good(ish) enough with a few scenes really showing what they were going for. But there’s not enough of them and what they have is only half-formed to begin with. For example, the Olympic long jump sequence has plenty of workable drama but they couldn’t make the bionic long jump scenes themselves very convincing or thrilling.

Overall, this isn’t a terrible film but it struggles to find its place. It’s a pretty good stab at a real-world issue. Plus crime. It’s decent but not decent enough at either.
