Bit

Rented (on iTunes) a new teen horror(adjacent) movie Bit. It’s vampires… and was recently rated one of the top ten horror movies of 2020 (which isn’t saying much given the release schedule) on some random YouTube video I watched. So decided to give it a shot.

Bit is about a young lady who moves to LA and almost immediately gets turned by a cadre of party-going young vampire ladies. It’s about her learning the vampire rules, deciding if she can drink blood, and dealing with the other vampires and their drama. It’s not really a horror movie… it’s just an edgy (adjacent) vampire movie with occasional suspense and drama.

This movie reminds me a lot of a feminist remake of The Lost Boys. Turn vampire and stay young and party forever… only with a feminist twist (it seems men shouldn’t be turned… they already have enough power and look how they run the world as-is).

But the movie is targeted at a pretty specific audience: goth teenage girls who sneer at movies like Twilight (which is indirectly referenced a couple times in voice over). I think they will enjoy the movie a lot. Me? I thought it was ok… I don’t have any problem with a vampire movie that takes the vampire thing pretty casually. It’s not horror… though it might have some creepy moments for some. I thought a lot of it was kind of hum-drum… some unique angles to its credit.

This movie is ok. It’s decent. It’s reasonably watchable and the attitude is kind of amusingly edgy. Taking the vampire thing like just another life choice (casually) and angling it with a young female feminist perspective has some merit. I’m not recommending it highly but if these angles in a vampire flick interest you, you might enjoy it well enough.
