Blame the Game

Blame the Game is a Netflix comedy about a guy who goes to game night and actually plays games… unlike in the (much funnier) American film Game Night. Unfortunately, the insufferable game group makes fun of him for liking The Settlers of Catan… and then they proceed to play Trivial Pursuit and threaten a game of Monopoly. Sigh. And this is a German film where most of those complex Eurogames are born.

Anyhoo, the flick is about couple in a new relationship where she invites him to her long-running game night. Her friends are insufferable jerks and weirdos and they do nothing but make him uncomfortable the whole time. But since its also a comedy of manners, he manages to release their exotic bird and his girlfriend’s ex shows up to make things even worse.

Yep… this is cringe comedy. If you enjoy someone taking it on the chin for the runtime while all the jerks pat themselves on the back for their wit, you’d love this movie. I’m more mixed on it myself but I had a decently good enough time to not hate it. It runs a little long and has a random naked ping pong game… and I’m not sure if that’s a net positive or negative.

But I generally come down on the movie being decent. Maybe worth a watch, depending on your tolerance for awkward comedy and game nights. It’s possible you’ve been at a game night like this if you play enough board games… so that’s something.
