Bone Tomahawk is a western horror movie starring Kurt Russel, Mathew Fox, David Arquette, and Patrick Wilson. The flick is about settlers and cowboy contending with an hunting a war party of sadistic, crazy, cannibalistic native Americans.
This is an interesting movie that people seem to love a lot more than I did. Not that it’s bad, but too much of the movie is riding horses (and ultimately walking) to a cave full of cannibals. To be sure, it’s atmospheric and can be quite creepy, especially when the blood and gore start to fly. But it’s a length 2hrs and 15mins of not a lot of interesting things happening. I did enjoy seeing Kurt Russel and Kurt Russel’s big ol’ mustache. You can’t go completely wrong with either!
I can also say that this kind of regressive Western was a thing of history. The story kind of boils down to violent cannibalistic monsters vs. the settlers. To be fair, the other (non-cannibalistic) tribes are a better representation (if, you know, for no other reason they aren’t all psychotic cannibals).
In the end though, it is a horror movie and you can’t have that without something malevolent. This time it’s natives and next time it’ll be hillbillies or Satanists or aliens or who knows what.
