Saw the new kid’s movie The Book of Life, based on the Mexican Day of the Dead and Mexican afterlife folklore (The Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten). It’s an interesting movie that honors (and gently mocks) Mexico using an interesting art style and uses wood cut/marionettes for its characters. Some of the character designs are distractingly ugly but generally it’s an handsome approach. It’s not a bad movie… it’s kind of fun, kind of exciting, kind of charming… Kids would probably enjoy it if, for nothing else, the explosion of colors and details. And learning about a major Mexican holiday (that isn’t Cinco De Mayo) has its appeal.
