Borderline is a thriller/stalker/comedy that walks a tight-rope of maybe being too creepy and making fun too much of stalkers. But I think it finds the right wobbly balance and charming helter skelter crazy to get away with it.
It stars Samara Weaving as a singer with a creepy stalker that security guy Eric Danes has to keep away. But the stalker has a plan to distract security and get into the house… assuming he can stop hallucinating long enough to realize which person is actually Samara Weaving.
The depiction of bugnuts crazy is arguably a little casual. He’s a delusional lunatic with sick and twisted plans and ambitions… but in a fun way! I guess maybe if you’ve had your own stalker (which I have not), then maybe its charms would be lost on you.
Though, honestly, the main stalker dude as played by Ray Nicholson is actually the least good character in the film. Something about his portrayal doesn’t ring as lunatic true as it should. But his two cohorts are a lot of fun… and Samara Weaving uses her expressive face for some quality mugging at the camera. Eric Dane too… which was an interesting surprise.
The tone of the film is a little off-key, swaying from some over-the-top insanity to more serious moments. It remains more a comedy though and it aught to elicit some laughs. I enjoyed it well enough.
