Classic Roll-Up Vol 26

Another round of classics (pre-2000) films. A pretty assorted lot.

1924 – The Thief of Baghdad – a reasonably entertaining but long and slow Arabian Nights tale. Was nice to see Douglas Fairbanks, at least.

1929 – Woman in the Moon – a surprisingly good 3 hour sci-fi film where the craziest thing isn’t that they landed on the moon, but there was a woman on the team *clutches pearls*

1959 – The World, The Flesh, and the Devil – a surprisingly good end of the world film where everyone has been wiped out except Harry Belafonte and a white woman. Gets into some nervous racial issues, especially for a film from ’59.

1960 – The City of the Dead – a pretty good atmospheric cult film (somehow not a zombie film with that title). Very reminiscent of classic Twilight Zone.

1963 – The Girl Who Knew Too Much – A Mario Bava Italian giallo about, get this, a woman who witnesses a murder but can’t remember whodunit. The black-gloved killer comes for her. Not bad.

1964 – First Men in the Moon – a pretty average but entertaining bit of sci-fi pulp from the mid 60s.

1964 – Robinson Crusoe on Mars – another mid 60s era space flight film mixed with the classic novel and a little “HIs Man Friday” racism. Pretty mid-grade pop corn of a movie.

1966 – Seconds – a surprisingly good, eerie paranoia thriller about a man who gets transformed into a winner but finds his life isn’t any better than before. Good social commentary.

1972 – Aguirre, The Wrath of God – have known about this film for years… and I was surprised to realize the title is ironic. A very good expedition to nowhere film about very bad people getting into trouble as they try to ransack South America.

1974 – Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry – huge meandering whatever example of 70s era car chase/crash films. An insanely bad ending too.

1981 – Fear No Evil – a pretty iffy forgotten 80s horror flick starring Satan and…  ummm…. I forget what else its about. Its forgettable.

1983 – Staying Alive – oil slick Travolta dances (and struts) in a movie as mediocre as its reputation.

1984 – The Initiation – a decent 80s slasher flick.

1984 – The Mutilator – a pretty decent 80s slasher film. Nuff said.

1985 – Crimewave – Sam Raimi’s failed goofball follow-up to the Evil Dead. I was totally not on its comedic wavelength until the final act. A not very good film with some sparks of originality.

1988 – Dream Demon – a surprisingly good unknown ’80s horror film about a killer who gets you in your dreams. Familiar but different enough to stand on its own.

1989 – Sweet Home – the origin of all those Resident Evil movies is this enthusiastic Japanese horror film set in a house in the woods. Pretty fun and imaginative flick.

1991 – Delicatessen – Another movie I just didn’t get. A wacky over-the-top style and sense of humor but I just felt nothing other than irritation.
