Not sure I had any interest in this flick… barely on my radar other than, you know, being at my local theater and a quarrelsome AMC Stubs card in my wallet. I figured it’d have a bit of fun with the DC superheroes and maybe, hopefully rise above the usual kids film pabulum. And it did… somewhat.
DC League of Super-Pets is about Krypto, Superman’s dog who rarely makes it off the funny pages. A nefarious guinea pig once owned by Lex Luthor uses orange kryptonite to gain superpowers. The other pets in the store also gain powers and set out to help Krypto take down the evil pets.
I laughed a decent amount at the film’s gentle ribbing of the various (human) members of the Justice League. Batman’s always a loner, the fish guy is always the fish guy, etc. That was enjoyable. And the pet jokes are off and on. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart team up (again) as the two lead superpups.
Anyhow, the movie is a little too long and has the usual level of kid film grade Z moralizing. Yeah, we’ve learned these lessons before… or, at least I have. The young’uns watching might find this absolutely 100% original and I guess (sigh) I have to acknowledge that. Target market existential crisis incoming.
Decent movie, I laughed occasionally and the third act action scene is pretty fun. I’ve seen better… and I’ve 100% seen worse.
