Death’s Roulette is a Mexican thriller about a group of kidnapped people locked into a mansion and forced to pick one of their number to murder. It’s like a basic Escape Room puzzle mixed with a tiresome game of Ultimate Werewolf.
Aaaaaand it starts out ok as we are introduced to each character and they begin to argue with each other. And argue and argue and argue and would they please shut up now? It gets tedious and it refuses to end when it should. Because they always have one more surprise to reveal, one more shoe to drop.
The finale goes on for way too long as we learn all the Dark Secrets and have to watch them squabble and refuse to play the game some more. The film grossly overestimates how interesting these characters are.
Still, there are a few decent moments of suspense and a couple twists that are technically a surprise. Except, by the end, all I could evince was a mild “if you say so, bub” when the surprises hit. Pretty much anyone could be in on it or be related to someone and I’d have shrugged.
This movie needed to be shorter, tighter, and have more interesting characters. Maybe then it’d have been the fun crackerjack they were trying to make.
