The Demon Disorder is a little mumblypegs nonsense exorcism movie that’s largely just murky and confusing… but at least it does something different. Even if that something largely feels like the demo real for a practical effects guru.
It’s about brothers who go home something something their dad… who is played by John Noble who I’m sure was on set for a day. Maybe two. Something something one of them gets possessed by Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force… something something… oh gross. That’s nasty! Do it again!
Yeah, for such a simple premise, I was weirdly lost at times. Shouldn’t have been… it’s a demonic infestation exorcism film. Doesn’t usually require rocket science but there was something in the way they told the story – sometimes in flashbacks – that had me scratching my head.
The gooey practical effects are good… they turn an exorcism movie into body horror as someone on the FX teams really likes people digging into their skin and popping out chunky chunks of meat. And later we get an ooey gooey practical monster that’s full of pustules and cryptic places where a face should be.
Oh, and sometimes the movie is funny. Like they flip a switch and change over from dire dreadful boring fear to weird comedy. The thing is, I actually chuckled at the funny bits. Probably should have been the vibe of the whole movie.
So credit for the goo… credit for the yuks… no credit for the boring tedium and mediocrity. I could have gone a long time without this flick… though I’ll probably remember the practical effects for a bit. If that was the goal, then achieved.
