Also, seven weeks in, got around to having the interest and the correct timing to see Despicable Me 3. And, you know, I should have gone sooner. Not that it’s a great movie but it’s not a terrible one and reminds me, yeah, I kind of liked the first two films. They aren’t great films but they have their charms. Unless you hate the Minions, in which case, never mind.
So Despicable Me 3 continues the adventures of Gru, now married and working for the good guys. He’s faced with a supervillain who is a former 80s child star, now re-enacting the evil plans his character did in the 80’s tv show he starred in. Gru also finds out he has a twin brother so they visit him. And Gru’s new wife wants to be more of a mother to the adopted children. And the youngest girl wants to find a unicorn. And the Minions quit and wind up in prison so they have to stage a jail break.
You get the point… this film is weirdly overstuffed with plots in what feels like an attempt to hit 90 minutes. Most of these subplots are ok themselves but the jarring and scattershot nature of the film got kind of annoying. That said, the Minions in prison were cute, the youngest daughter’s unicorn obsession was cute, and the 80s villain was pretty great. He fights – and dance fights – to the tunes of a lot of the usual 80s songs. Not deep cuts but it’s always fun to hear these tracks.
It’s a good enough movie and made me smile often enough to give it a mild recommendation. There’s plenty better movies and if you are a Minions hater, while they aren’t in the movie very much, they will still aggravate you and you should avoid the flick. But the rest of us, if you have kids who want to see it, it’s not so bad.
