Die Hart 2: Die Harter

I think I was supposed to open a review of Die Hart 2 by saying, “well, at least its better than the cobbled together first one”. Except, yeah, I didn’t think so. I found this a worse film… easily one of Hart’s least interesting action/comedies and that’s saying something.

Die Hart 2: Die Harter continues the trends of the first film of being an action/comedy that has nothing to do with Die Hard. It’s an amusing title but it’d have been funnier if they actually used it for better – or any – targeted laughs.

In this one, the actual Kevin Hart wants to produce a new live guerilla-style action film. And things go wrong when a goon becomes interested in the idea… and Kevin Hart’s stunt double (played poorly by Kevin Hart) gets offended too.

Kevin Hart should never try… that’s what I got out of the disastrously unfunny alter ego he plays. He should just stick to being the usual Kevin Hart character because his instincts to be funny while putting on a lame idiot character just didn’t work… and actively annoyed me.

Not that it would matter if he was a short black Daniel Day Lewis… the rest of the film is depressingly unfunny too. And it doesn’t help they are playing in the same Hollywood stuntman sandbox that The Fall Guy did so well. Maybe this film would have been better if Fall Guy didn’t exist? Probably not… but at least I wouldn’t have spent 90 minutes thinking “Wow, that was unfortunate timing for Kevin Hart”.

I smirked a couple times but this comedy just doesn’t work. I’d suggest everyone avoid it unless you have a thing for Kevin Hart. I do not.
