So Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote and directed a movie (Don Jon – out this weekend) starring a buffed-up version of himself as a goddamn sexual tyranasaur (Predator reference) who makes out with (and dry humps) Scarlett Johansen. But it wasn’t just some fantasy flick he wrote for himself – his character is not meant to be perfect… he’s got issues (he’s addicted to porn, house-cleaning, confession and he has rage and honesty issues). This is very much an adult (but not immature) romantic comedy that hates romantic comedies… and porn… and makes a logical parallel between the two.
What happens is surprising and interesting… a lot of time I had no idea where it was going next and that’s a relief after so many cookie-cutter flicks. It’s not a perfect movie but I laughed (and pondered).
Gordon-Levitt (besides being buffed up eye-candy) is quite good as a fairly unlikable guy and ScarJo (besides being sizling eye-candy) also pulls off what is ultimately a more complicated character than I figured.
And Tony Danza is in it.
Tony Danza.
And he’s good.
I recommend the movie with the caveat that it shows a lot of heavily edited porn, it has some fairly explicit sex scenes, some fairly erotic scenes, and a busload of swearing.
