Don’t Look at the Demon is a a generic haunted house/demon possession film that’s really just good advice if you think about it. Yeah, one probably shouldn’t look at the demon. Maybe the characters in the movie should have taken the advice since they look at the demon ALL the damn time.
The flick is about a team of American tv ghost hunters who go on tour in Asia. While venturing through Malaysia, they decide to help a wealthy white couple with their haunted house problems. Because, I dunno, if you wanna avoid being accused of a white savior trope, just have your white cast help rich white folk. Problem solved.
I really hated this film for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with its plot. It seemed to have multiple missing scenes and simple insert shots, the characters act irrationally or completely forget what happened from scene to scene, and it’s generally… what’s the phrase I’m looking for? Not remotely scary at all? Not original or creative? Same old jump scares I’ve seen hundreds of times before? Yeah, those’ll do.
I had multiple moments sitting there by myself in an empty theater where I had to pause and ask myself what I’d missed. I couldn’t figure out why characters were doing things or why this or that event occurred. This happened enough time throughout the movie that I began to wonder if I was drowsing off or the editor was.
I could give it a little credit for looking decent… but with all the other production issues, they don’t deserve it.
I really disliked this super generic and incomplete film. About the only good thing about it is that advice. Thanks movie, I’ll be sure to shun the demon. Maybe that’ll keep movies like this from being made.
