The Drop is a Brooklyn crime movie about a bar that acts as a drop for the mafia (where dirty money can be dropped and collected later)… and it’s about doggy day care. It’s James Gandolfini’s last role along with an amazing Tom Hardy who acts his ass off with a demeanor I’ve never seen on him. He’s playing a quiet, kinda smart, kinda dumb schmo… he finds a beaten up puppy in Noomi Rapace’s garbage can and they form a relationship over the dog… and meanwhile, two-bit hoods knock over the bar and steal the Chechen mafia’s money drop which is a big problem. It’s a very moody, very atmospheric film that’s set very believably in its world. Very good movie.
It’s based on a Dennis LeHane story called Animal Rescue… which proves it is, indeed, just as much about doggy day care than gangsters and tough guys.
I’d say see if you like street-level dramas about believable people living their lives that are equal part normal and tied in with violent gangsters. See it for the amazing acting and solid writing. It’s not a fast-paced movie but it’s always interesting, especially in that it hardly has a traditional story structure.
