Hey, it was a 99 cent rental on iTunes so I finally gave in. I expected trash, I got trash. But I got fairly entertaining trash. There’s that kind of sleaze that knows its sleazy and this movie, I think, knew what it was and basked in it. Thoroughly bathed in human trash. Maybe not as winking as something like Wild Things, but still… it knows what it is and goes in full steam.
Michael Ealy – who seems to go out of the way to star in movies like this – is a successful sports agent who has one of them there 7 Year Itches… so he has a one-night-stand in Vegas with Hilary Swank. But it turns out she has one of them there Fatal Attractions. And when there’s an Unlawful Entry into Ealy’s home, Swank turns out to be the detective on the case. And before you can say Strangers on a Train, we have a deadly game of cat and mouse… and some other clichés to boot. As you would expect from a plot as melodramatic as this.
I can’t say I was always engaged… the movie loses a lot of steam in its final act. But I enjoyed the setup and the silly/stupid scenarios… I enjoyed the pop junk thriller that this movie is. I didn’t love it but I certainly enjoyed it more than its reputation would have led me to believe. I guess I could say I got my 99 cents out of it, even if I can’t get that 90 minutes back. You get some, you lose some.
Is this a smart movie? Nah… could everything be resolves with a couple phone calls? Sure. But whatever… it isn’t meant to be a logical, rational film about smart people. But about dumb people who get in over there head and other clichés. I was mildly entertained.
